Do You Have a Rainy Day Drawer?

Easily accessible fun and entertainment whenever you may need it.

By Allison Tursi, Holbrook Macaroni Kid Publisher Mom December 30, 2021

I decided to make a “rainy day drawer,” a “we got snowed in bin,” a “our plans got canceled so we need something fun to do stash,“ a “we tested positive and need to quarantine so I need activities for my kids to do before we all go crazy container.”  Basically a collection of fun items for the kids that I could grab at any second we need them. I collected several items from the store that we don’t necessarily play with on the regular. Items I thought would make them smile and keep them occupied for more than 5 minutes.

It’s easy to do and anyone can do this at home (hey, you may already have items at home that would be great to start off with). I like having it all in 1 place so I don’t have to look for it later on or completely forget I have something for them to do. You can keep it in your closet, in the basement, or anywhere you have some free space. It doesn't need to be anything expensive, it can even be items from the dollar store (or the $1.25 store).

Here’s what I have in my bin:

  • Wubble Bubble Balls
  • Insta-Snow
  • Water Beads
  • Putty
  • Slime
  • Dot Paint
  • Glow Bracelets (balls, wands, necklaces, and others)
  • Punch Balloons
  • Crayola Model Magic (and markers)
  • Lanyard

Other Items I have on hand:

  • Marble Run
  • Crafts
  • Beads
  • Fuse Beads
  • Sensory Bins

Now I feel prepared for any bump in the road that may occur. Of course I will continue to add to my bin as I see things in the stores and I’m always looking for fun suggestions if you have any!

I am also a huge fan of sensory bins which are super simple to make and the kids love them! - I highly recommend sensory bins! Learn more about DIY Sensory Bins!
